US, Mexico reach deal on migration

The agreement followed several days of criticism of Trump's threat to use tariffs to get the Mexican government to stop the invasion of migrant into the US, essentially unhindered by Mexico.

"The Governments of the United States and Mexico will work together to immediately implement a durable solution", it said.

Mexico has already helped the United States crack down on asylum seekers in recent months, increasing the number of migrants rounded up and deported to Central American countries, as well as allowing refugee claimants to stay in Mexico while their cases work their way through the US system.

Trump had on Friday announced that his administration reached an agreement with Mexico over immigration, owing to which tariffs on the Central American country were "indefinitely suspended", after days of gruelling negotiations between the two sides.

USA officials had laid out steps Mexico could take to prevent the tariffs, but many people had doubts that even those steps would be enough to satisfy Trump on illegal immigration, a signature issue of his presidency and one that he sees as crucial to his 2020 re-election campaign.

In a joint declaration, the two countries said Mexico would take "unprecedented" steps to curb irregular migration and human trafficking.

Last week, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador agreed to increase border security on his country's northern border.

Trump tweeted Friday night that he would hold off on a 5% tariff on all Mexican imports set to take effect Monday.

Trump had said earlier that Democrats have forced him to take action against Mexico because they aren't willing to fix the US immigration laws that are fueling the immigration crisis.

The move puts to an end - for now - a threat that had sparked dire warnings from members of Trump's own party, who warned the tariffs would damage the economy, drive up prices for consumers and imperil an updated North American trade pact. President Trump must stop sabotaging good-faith, constructive, and bipartisan efforts in Congress to address this complex problem in a humane manner that honors and respects our most cherished national values.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said in Washington that the National Guard deployment would start on Monday.

"From our perspective of where we are now, it is a result of them backtracking on significant commitments", Mnuchin said.

"We have reached some middle point", he said. "If they want to come back and complete the deal on the terms we were negotiating, that would be great". He added that the provisions in the agreement were "likely to have only a small impact on solving the root causes of Central American migration because numerous components are things Mexico is already doing".

"Thanks to all the people who have supported us by realizing the greatness of Mexico", he wrote.

Mexico will also reinforce its southern border with Guatemala with thousands of National Guard officers.

The programme, commonly known as Remain in Mexico, has been operating since January in the border cities of Tijuana, Mexicali and Ciudad Juarez.

The stakes were raised on Wednesday as US Customs and Border Protection announced that migrant arrests had surged in May to the highest level in more than a decade.

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke mocked President Trump's claims of victory in the recent deal reached with Mexico to avert his threatened tariffs - calling the president's claims "overblown" and arguing that he has hurt the economic ties between Washington and its closest neighbor.
