Thiem stuns Djokovic to reach French Open final

Austrian fourth seed Thiem, his victim in last year's final, has enjoyed none of those advantages, needing two weather-disrupted days and five sets to get rid of world number one Novak Djokovic in the other semi-final.

Serbia's Novak Djokovic reacts after missing a shot against Austria's Dominic Thiem in their semifinal match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris, Saturday, June 8, 2019.

Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies became the first German pair to win a Grand Slam men's doubles title after beating France's Fabrice Martin and Jeremy Chardy in the French Open final.

It will be the fourth straight day that Thiem is in action because of postponements, whereas Nadal will be well-rested, having played his quarterfinal Tuesday and his semifinal Friday, when he beat Roger Federer 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

Thiem will face 11-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal on Sunday in a rematch of last year's final.

"One of the worst conditions I have ever been part of", the disgruntled, 32-year-old Djokovic told reporters minutes after his 26-match winning run in Grand Slam play was ended.

Djokovic and Thiem's match was played on Friday, but halfway into the third set, the match had to be suspended due to rain and strong winds.

Nothing changed in the final set and Nadal sailed the deal winning the match 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

But a sensational forehand pass by Thiem gave him a fourth set point which he converted when his dipping backhand forced a volley error from Djokovic.

On Saturday, the 2016 champion's mood was not improved by being slapped with a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Koeman urges de Ligt to make a decision
All four clubs have more to offer than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side yet some reports still claim he has an advantage. De Ligt was instrumental in that run with United seemingly targeting him to short up their leaky defence.

Thiem is attempting to win his first major title, Nadal his 18th.

There was another rain delay midway through the fifth set after it resumed on Saturday.

Thiem broke to move into a 4-1 lead and had a point to lead 5-1, which Djokovic saved with a clubbing forehand.

"It's really just kind of surviving in these kind of conditions and trying to hold your serve and play one ball more than your opponent in the court".

He crumbled, however, losing four points in a row and his chance appeared to have gone.

Djokovic certainly looked more focused on the restart, although it was still breezy and cool, and he quickly retrieved the break only to give the advantage away when he served at 5-6.

Thiem did it the hard way, squandering a 4-1 final set lead and two match points before he sealed his place in the final.

Now, Calvert has broken down Nadal vs. Thiem, combining detailed statistical analysis and his years covering the sport to produce three best bets on this titanic matchup.

"An epic match. I mean, so many ups and downs. I guess they know tennis better".
