Huawei ready to sign 'no-spy' agreements

Huawei's chairman has come over to the United Kingdom to do a bit of metaphorical firefighting in the wireless infrastructure world, and has come up with an wonderful plan to stop Western firms worrying about the tech firm handing the Chinese government access to our communications: promising it won't, via an innovative "no-spy" pledge.

"We are willing to sign no-spy agreements with governments, including the United Kingdom government, to commit ourselves to making our equipment meet the no-spy, no-backdoors standard", said Liang Hua, Huawei chairman. Furthermore, concerns about Chinese law requiring Huawei to cooperate with China's intelligence agencies were simply hype.

The move was made as a way of allowing the federal government to prevent companies from doing business with other countries, including the Chinese firm Huawei, the Washington Post reported.

"Today, President Donald J Trump signed an Executive Order entitled "Securing the Information and Communications Technology and Services Supply Chain" as part of his commitment to protecting the information and communications technology and services of our Nation", the White House said in a statement.

Trump's action comes just days after US-China trade talks broke down without a deal, and the US placed into effect a tariff increase on billions of dollars' worth of Chinese imports.

The order, which would not name specific countries or companies, has been under consideration for more than a year, but has been repeatedly delayed, the sources said, asking not to be named because the preparations remain confidential.

The US told allies not to use Huawei's technology to build new 5G telecommunications networks because of concerns it could be a vehicle for Chinese spying.

Analysts believe the order is mainly targeting Chinese telecom giant Huawei.

The executive charged is Huawei's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Canada in December. Soon, the same might be true for USA companies. Huawei has said its work does not pose any threat. In January 2018, USA carriers shunned Huawei's newly-launched flagship, the Mate 10 Pro.

At a hearing on May 14, USA senators raised alarm about allies using Chinese equipment in 5G networks.

While the big wireless companies have already cut ties with Huawei, small rural carriers continue to rely on Huawei and ZTE switches, and other equipment because they tend to be cheaper.
