Arthur teacher comes out in children's cartoon series

In the episode, "Mr. Ratburn and the Special Someone", Arthur and his classmates are surprised to learn their teacher, Mr. Ratburn, is engaged to be married because they can not accept that teachers have personal lives.

The episode also features a lot of shock from Mr Ratburn's students - not because they find out he's gay, but because they're shocked teachers actually have a social life outside of the classroom.

People took to Twitter when they learned about the episode - but many were sharing their disbelief that "Arthur" was still on the air.

Popular children's television series Arthur made a splash during its latest season premiere, which featured a coming out storyline for one character.

Mr Ratburn is marrying Patrick, a warm aardvark chocolatier from earlier in the episode.

Although Mr. Ratburn's husband doesn't have any lines, he does wink at the kids as he's walking down the aisle.

After learning about the engagement, Arthur, Buster and the rest of the gang eventually come across Mr. Ratburn having lunch with his sister, who they think is the woman he's planning on marrying. "Arthur really said gay rights", one person tweeted about the news. Cut to the dance floor, where Buster approaches his friends with a plate of "the best cake I've ever had", a nod to Mr. Ratburn's famous love of the dessert.

GLAAD was among many who congratulated the beloved teacher on Twitter.

'Mr. Ratburn is the gay icon I never knew I needed, ' a viewer wrote. It is based on Marc Brown's Arthur Adventure book series and has so far run for 246 episodes.
