Germany: 2 more bodies found in Passau crossbow deaths case

A spokesman for state prosecutors in Passau said the two dead women were found in the town of Wittingen in the northwestern state of Lower Saxony.

The mystery began on Saturday when an employee in the guesthouse in Passau found three guests - a 53-year-old man, a 33-year-old woman and a 30-year-old woman - dead in a room with crossbow bolts in their bodies.

Police then searched the home of the 30-year-old female victim in north Germany, where two more bodies were found.

The investigators are trying to learn more about the connection between the three victims, examining evidence found in the room and a vehicle parked at the resort with stickers and plaques indicating that it could have belonged to an archer or hunter. Police didn't release further details on the identities of the three. Police said Monday they had found a third, unused crossbow inside a bag.

The other woman was lying on the floor with a bolt in her chest.

The women were found dead in an apartment belonging to one of the women found dead in a hotel several hundred kilometres away.

The group of three had checked into the hotel at 22:00 on Friday evening, and had booked to stay there for three nights, Passauer Neue Presse wrote. The trio wished the hotel staff a "good evening", took water and coke, and went upstairs to the second floor.

Bavarian police said they found two crossbows lying nearby, but don't think anyone else was involved.

There was no sign of a fight, nor of another participant, police said.

According to the German Shooting Sport and Archery Federation, there are no restrictions on anyone over the age of 18 acquiring a crossbow in Germany.
