Red Sox contingent honored at White House

So as you may have heard by now, the Boston Red Sox visited President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday to celebrate their 2018 World Series victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. But the Patriots have not been able to find a date that works yet.

The Globe's Adrian Walker said that most fans would focus on the sports part of the day, and the team itself, but also that there was "some feeling" in Boston that Cora ought to have gone to the White House and made his case for Puerto Rico.

- For decades, championship teams have visited the White House in a moment of ritual and tradition. Four of their previous five visits have come in April, and the 2004 visit came on May 10. The team's third-base coach, Carlos Febles, who is from the Dominican Republic, stood two rows behind the president.

"I think I'll be a neutral in this one", joked Trump, a noted Yankees fan who was close friends with the Bronx Bombers' late owner George Steinbrenner.

"Unfortunately, we are still struggling, still fighting", Cora said in a statement.

"That's called a power pitcher, by the way", President Trump said. The Philadelphia Eagles' visit after winning the Super Bowl in 2018 was canceled after it became clear that there will be just a handful of players attending.

"Even though the United States Government has helped, there's still a long road ahead", Cora told Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia.

Trump walked out to the South Lawn of the White House for the ceremony flanked by Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale and outfielder J.D. Martinez - who as the only player of color to announce before the event that he would attend.

"It's going to be divided, '" Manager Alex Cora told WEEI (via Boston.com) Wednesday in Baltimore, where the Red Sox were playing the Orioles.

"Frankly, they were unstoppable", Mr. Trump said. So if the press, the media, doesn't report me for this, I'm going to take them up and show them the Lincoln Bedroom.

Asked earlier about some of the Sox not attending, Trump claimed that Puerto Rico has received adequate storm recovery funding, while citing an inaccurate $91 billion figure.

For some players, it might be their only chance for a White House invite. And an Elks Club in the team's former spring training home of Winter Haven, Florida, invited only white players to events, a practice that stopped only in the 1980s, when black players complained.
