Constance Wu explains unhappy response to her sitcom renewal

Constance Wu is speaking out after her seemingly surprising response to news of Fresh Off The Boat's renewal.

Wu wrote, "No, it's not", in a since-deleted tweet responding to a fan who called the renewal "great news".

Wu backtracked with another series of tweets, saying her earlier comments were on the heels of a rough day and "ill timed". I was temporarily upset yesterday not bc [sic] I hate the show but bc [sic] its renewal meant I had to give up another project that I was really passionate about.

When ABC announced the renewal Friday, Wu said in a series of tweets that it was not welcome news.

Wu's star rose considerably in 2018 with her lead role in "Crazy Rich Asians", a major hit that got her a Golden Globe nomination. "Stop assuming", she tweeted. "I did not say it was over a tv show", she stated.

Constance later returned to Twitter to ask fans to stop making assumptions about her comments. "I love the word", she wrote. "So my dismayed social media replies were more about that other project and not about FOTB", the actress wrote in a statement posted to Twitter on Saturday.

As Wu received a mix of both shocked and supportive responses, including some speculating that the renewal may impede her blossoming film career, she tweeted that she wasn't on "a rampage", just that she frequently uses that expletive.

Loosely based on Eddie Huang's 2013 autobiography of the same name, the '90s-set comedy centers on the Huang family, who relocate from Washington D.C., to Orlando in order for Eddie's dad (Randall Park) to open his own steakhouse. "And when you don't have pressure, you can be free and experiment with the characters and play around", she added.

"The scheduling has been challenging, to say the least, but the experience of going back, other than the scheduling, has been just great", she admitted about filming the series while doing Crazy Rich Asians press. "Everyone there, we've known each other for over four years, most of the crew and all of the cast, so it's very familiar", Wu said of returning to season 5.
