Muscle-flexing: North Korea slams Bolton for 'stupid' remarks: KCNA

Returning to military optics for the first time in five months, Kim on Tuesday paid a surprise visit to an Air Force base to inspect fighter combat readiness and followed that up the next day by supervising the test of what the North's official media described ominously but ambiguously - and without any photos or video - as a new type of "tactical guided weapon".

"Tactical weapons are for attacking South Korea, not the U.S.", Park Hwee-rhak, a political scientist at Kookmin University in Seoul and a former South Korean army colonel, told NPR in a phone interview.

Despite Pompeo's comments, the future of USA engagement with North Korea has appeared to be in limbo since the summit, with no sign of direct contact between the two sides.

I am afraid that if Pompeo engages in the talks again, the table will be lousy once again and the talks will become entangled.

"I don't have the details; I just haven't been chasing it, there's been a few other priorities, so that'd give you kind of a sense of where it ranks", acting U.S. Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said before talks at the Pentagon with his Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya.

North Korea's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper said earlier that Kim supervised the weapon test at the Academy of Defense Science on Wednesday.

Satellite images suggest work has continued at facilities including the Yongbyon nuclear facility and the Sohae rocket launch site, although analysts point out that the North's self-imposed testing moratorium limits the improvements the North can make in building a nuclear-armed missile that could hit the continental U.S.

"Pompeo is not frozen out as long as Trump wants him to do the job, and the North Koreans have to live with that", Yun added.

During a speech at Texas A&M University on Monday, Pompeo said Kim promised to denuclearize during his first summit with President Donald Trump and that USA officials were working with the North Koreans to "chart a path forward so we can get there". He gave a year-end deadline for a change in attitude.

Trump has said he is open to another summit with Kim, but his national security adviser, John Bolton, told Bloomberg News on Wednesday there first needed to be "a real indication from North Korea that they've made the strategic decision to give up nuclear weapons". -North Korea summit in February, The Associated Press reported.

Kwon also said the two leaders were on good terms, even as he castigated Pompeo for "fabricated" stories as part of a "publicity stunt". In November, Kim oversaw the test of what KCNA also referred to as a newly developed "high-tech tactical weapon".

Although the test didn't appear to be of a banned mid- or long-range ballistic missile that could scuttle chances of resuming the negotiations, it allowed North Korea to show its people it is pushing ahead with weapons development and reassuring hardline military officials anxious that diplomacy with Washington is a sign of weakness.

Since then, North Korea has said it is mulling options for its diplomacy with the USA, and Kim said last week he was open to talks with Trump only if Washington came with the "proper attitude".
