Hackers in Microsoft's webmail breach could read some users' messages

After this pushback, Microsoft responded that around 6 percent of customers had suffered unauthorized access to their emails, and that these customers received different breach notifications to make this clear.

A report from Motherboard and citing an unnamed source with knowledge of the hack reveals that the attackers could "gain access to any email account as long as it wasn't a corporate level account". However, they were definitely able to see the subject lines of emails and contact information that affected users had communicated with.

An unknown number of Microsoft Corp. email account users, including those using Outlook and Hotmail, may have had details of emails stolen in a hack that lasted from January 1 to March 28.

The software giant discovered a support agent's credentials were compromised for its Web mail service, allowing unauthorised access to some accounts between January and March 28.

National Enquirer for sale as tabloid feels heat from…
Attorneys for Bezos, the world's richest man, have been engaged in negotiations regarding his electronics. A phone message seeking comment from Chatham was not immediately returned.

The number of accounts is described as "limited" but while the situation over the weekend - first reported by TechCrunch - appeared to be limited to information related to customer accounts, Motherboard then reported that a witness told them the information actually involved the full content of emails.

Microsoft's Outlook hack is worse than the company originally warned.

The support account would also have only had access to free Outlook.com/Hotmail/MSN-branded accounts, and not to paid Office 365 email. Without providing numbers of those affected, it's known that at least some of them were in the European Union, meaning that the data breach will fall under the purview of the EU General Data Protection Regulation.

While the breach is severe, Microsoft claims that the most sensitive of personal data - passwords and the contents of emails, as well as any files attached to said emails - were not accessible using the stolen credentials. Out of an abundance of caution, we also increased detection and monitoring to further protect affected accounts.
