Fisher-Price Rock n' Play recall today after reports of infant deaths

Fisher-Price is recalling some 5 million "Rock 'n Play sleepers after more than 30 infant suffocation or strangulation deaths over the past decade have been linked to the product rolling over". It cited a report from Consumer Reports, which said 32 babies had died in the sleepers.

The sleepers were sold at major retailers throughout the United States for approximately $40 to $149.

Following a warning about a popular product for newborns that can be unsafe for children, The Consumer Product Safety Commission has now issued a recall of all Rock n' Play sleepers.

Consumers who have a Rock 'n Play Sleeper can contact Fisher-Price for a refund or voucher. The analysis found that numerous children who had died were younger than 3 months old.

Consumers are advised to contact Fisher-Price online or by calling 866-812-6518 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.

A previous warning from Fisher-Price said that older babies that were not buckled into the sleeper had rolled over, fallen out of it and been killed.

Taiwan abuzz with tale of live bees feeding on woman's eye
The woman was diagnosed with cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection, and severe corneal erosion caused by the tiny insects. While the bees are commonplace, doctors stress it's extraordinarily rare for the insects to slide under someone's eyelid.

"I urge consumers to report any incidents with inclined sleepers or other nursery products to CPSC at saferproducts.gov", she said in a video statement.

This warning, however, did not name Fisher Price. Tragically, that is not the case. "We stand by the safety of our products", Scothon said. "There is convincing evidence that the Rock "n Play inclined sleeper puts infants" lives at risk". The cause of death for some of the babies was asphyxia, or the inability to breathe due to the child's position.

"Fisher-Price and Mattel, their parent company, we are in negotiations to discuss kind of what we expect from talking about and speaking out on the dangers of this chair", Evan Overton said.

Earlier this week, the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) urged the product's recall, labelling the sleeper "deadly".

More information about the recall can be found here.
