Magic Johnson shockingly steps down as Lakers president

Magic Johnson quit on the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, which could mean a lot of things for the iconic National Basketball Association franchise, though the biggest immediate one might be the future of head coach Luke Walton.

The press conference by Johnson lasted well over 40 minutes.

"I think that I had more fun when I was able to be the big brother and ambassador to everybody", he continued. "I was thinking about all those times, all those guys who want me to mentor them or be a part of their lives, and I can't even do that. I want to go back to who I was before taking on this job". "Serena Williams called me a week ago and said, 'Will you mentor me and be on my advisory board?' And I said, 'Yeah, I'm going to do that'". "Hopefully just a few more weeks and then I can go out there". On Wednesday morning, the members of the Lakers' young core were the only people with any standing in the organization who showed up to answer questions about what in the hell was going on in the wake of Johnson's shocking resignation a night earlier.

Johnson told reporters that he had not yet informed owner Jeanie Buss of his decision to resign, stating that he could not tell her "face-to-face" but added that he loved her like a sister. He missed the next 17 games and the team never recovered.

CAS: First ever black hole images in the final stage of 'printing'

The Lakers also dealt with injuries to key role players - including Lonzo Ball, Rajon Rondo, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart - and they shut down James for the rest of 2018-19 in late March.

Sources told USA Today Sports that James had no idea Johnson was leaving the team while ESPN reported that the NBA All-Star was "completely caught off guard" by the announcement.

The Lakers will miss the playoffs for their sixth consecutive season, their longest postseason drought in franchise history. Is it possible that without Johnson, James isn't in the Lakers' long-term plans?
