Barr: I Think Spying on Trump Campaign 'Did Occur'

Attorney General William Barr testified to Congress that he believes the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald Trump was spied on.

"I think spying on a political campaign is a big deal", Barr said.

Earlier Wednesday, Barr told a Senate panel he believes "spying did occur" on Trump's presidential campaign, aligning himself more closely with the president's views on the origins of the Russian Federation investigation. "Especially the generation that I grew up in... the Vietnam War period, people were concerned about spying on anti-war people and so forth by the government", said Barr.

"Personally, I would still favor one uniform federal rule against marijuana", Barr said during the hearing. Justice Roberts' opinion said it can be upheld as a tax even though it couldn't otherwise be upheld", Barr said, calling the mandate "unconstitutional in my opinion", and adding, "But for finding it a tax you would have had five votes against it.

"I'm not suggesting it wasn't adequately predicted, but I need to explore that", said Barr, who has set up a team at the Department of Justice to investigate the origins of the Obama administration's FBI and DOJ investigation into Trump.

Barr said that he plans to form a team to gather information from the Justice Department and Capitol Hill related to the FBI's investigation, which was formally opened on July 31, 2016.

Trump, speaking to reporters Wednesday at the White House, decreed it an "illegal investigation" conducted by "dirty cops".

Taken all together, at a minimum, Barr generally ratified a view of the Russian Federation investigation that will make Trump very pleased with his new Attorney General. Barr also said, in response to questions by Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY), that the redacted version of the Mueller report that Congress would see would be the same one that the public sees. They say that was the start of the probe that Trump calls a "witch hunt" and that Mueller took over after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

Trump is removing Secret Service director Randolph ‘Tex’ Alles
Secret Service officials have been caught by surprise with the news and are only finding out through CNN, according to the source. A senior administration official said Trump asked for Nielsen's resignation when the two met at the White House on Sunday.

Asked if she still thought Trump was not worth impeachment, Pelosi said to wait and see the full report.

It is a credit to Attorney General Bill Barr that his testimony Tuesday morning before a House Appropriations subcommittee seemed, for the most part, like a non-event.

President Trump continued to blast the investigation as an "attempted coup" and an act of treason.

Barr said the legislation is still being reviewed by his office but that he would "much rather. the approach taken by the STATES Act than where we now are".

Justice Department officials are scouring the report to remove grand jury information and details relating to pending investigations, among other materials.

It's not entirely clear what spying Barr is specifically referring to.

Barr, appearing before a Senate panel, did not say what "spying" had taken place.

The former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper was asked on ABC in May past year if the Federal Bureau of Investigation had indeed snooped on the Trump team.
