Trump is removing Secret Service director Randolph ‘Tex’ Alles

In a statement, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Alles had "done a great job at the agency over the last two years, and the president is thankful for his over 40 years of service to the country".

CNN reported that Trump in recent weeks empowered his hard-line conservative aide Stephen Miller to lead the administration's border policies and quoted the official as saying Miller's plans amount to a wholesale decapitation of the Department of Homeland Security's leadership.

Just five days ago, Trump said he "could not be happier with Secret Service" following the Mar-a-Lago incident.

Secret Service officials have been caught by surprise with the news and are only finding out through CNN, according to the source.

She said Secret Service member James Murray would take over as director in May.

A senior administration official said Trump asked for Nielsen's resignation when the two met at the White House on Sunday. Alles remains in his position as of now but has been asked to leave.

Alles, a former Marine general who had no prior ties to the Secret Service, was recommended to the post by former White House chief of staff John Kelly. The announcement of his departure comes a day after the ouster of DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. A former two-star Marine Corps general, he was the first Secret Service director in at least a century to have not come from within the agency.

Alles had been told Trump was preparing to make changes in leadership throughout the Department of Homeland Security, which includes oversight of the Secret Service.
