Missile Test Debris Should Dissolve In 45 Days: Defence Research Chief

India's recent test of anti-satellite (A-SAT) missile has been termed as "a bad, awful thing" by NASA chief Jim Bridenstine, who said that it is estimated that the risk to the ISS has increased by 44 per cent over the last ten days.

The Pentagon on Thursday (April 4) stated that it stood by Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan's assessment last week that debris from an Indian anti-satellite weapons test would eventually burn up in the atmosphere, despite a subsequent, more negative assessment by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). "From our simulation, we can very clearly say that the possibilities of (debris) hitting the ISS are not there", Reddy said. "Best way of defence is to have deterrence", Reddy said.

Taking a jibe at senior Congress leader P Chidambaram's statement on Mission Shakti, the DRDO Chief said, mission of this nature after a test is conducted can't be kept secret.

India in late March joined the ranks of U.S., Russian Federation and China by successfully targeting live satellite on a low-earth orbit.

"Because satellite is tracked by many stations across the world by manypeople", said Mr Reddy. All critical technologies for the test were developed indigenously and about 90% of the entire test in indigenous, Dr. Reddy added. The idea began around 2014 and development started in 2016 with a go-ahead from the government.

These includes about 10,000 pieces of space debris, of which almost 3,000 were created by a Chinese anti-satellite test. We don't need any more tests in this orbit as of now. Some 150 scientists worked round-the-clock and some 2,000 components were sourced from 50 private industries.

India said on Saturday it is looking to play a role in drafting global laws on different aspects of outer space as a major space faring nation with proven technology such as ground-based direct hit deterrence capability.

India has hailed the test as a sign that it is a space power.

"If you are talking of the U.S., we have a response from four-five United States agencies". NASA Calls Mission Shakti "Terrible Thing".

Meanwhile, on March 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India has entered the elite space superpower category with the successful testing of an anti-satellite weapon under Mission Shakti.
