Cali's body was found in an area of Staten Island that has been home to some of New York's most notorious mobsters and their families.

Someone called 911 about the crash - in addition to other calls about shots fired out on the street, sources said.

Cali was the first NY crime family boss shot in 34 years, according to WPIX.

Legendary New York Post and Daily News crime beat writer Murray Weiss, now a producer for CBS News' "48 Hours", extensively covered the Gambino crime family and told WCBS 880's Steve Scott he has a theory that Cali's murder may also have a connection to the Gotti family.

Castellano's death led to the rise of John "Dapper Don" Gotti, who then took over as Gambino family boss, running criminal enterprises ranging from gambling to money laundering to prostitution.

The reported crime boss of the New York Mafia's Gambino family, Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali, was gunned down in front of his Staten Island home late Wednesday, police and media said.

Cali faced just one arrest over his career, over an extortion plot linked to a failed bid to build a Nascar race track. He was convicted of racketeering and murder in 1992 and later died in prison.

Sources said the getaway vehicle was a blue pickup truck, reported NBC New York.

The New York Times notes that Cali's murder came the same day Joseph Cammarano, thought to be the acting boss of the Bonanno crime family, was acquitted at trial.

Cali was an associate in the Gambino family, according to court documents, when he was indicted in 2008 with more than two dozen other Gambino members for a range of alleged crimes. "The word that I'm hearing is this: That there's old school tension and friction".
