‘Blood was splashing on me’: Witnesses describe horrific New Zealand mosque attack

- A male in his late 20s has been charged with murder and is due to appear at a Christchurch court on Saturday morning.

Chicago police said there are no known threats to Chicago, but they will be keeping a closer eye on mosques.

In addition to the main suspect, two other men are in custody, although their link to the attack is unknown.

It was by far the deadliest shooting in modern New Zealand history.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison stated that the shooter in the Christchurch mosque attack was an Australian citizen, describing the suspect as an "extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist".

"Harrowing news from New Zealand overnight" said EU Council president Donald Tusk.

At least 48 people were wounded, some critically.

A spokesman for the Faizen e Madina Mosque in Gladstone Street tweeted: "Saddened and shocked by the horrific terrorist attacks on Mosques in #Christchurch".

Gym manager Tracey Gray confirmed the man who filmed the attack and streamed it online was Tarrant.

Two explosives were also found rigged to a single vehicle. An officer stopped him.

"Prayers go to the victims and their families", the Pakistani PM tweeted.

"We New Zealanders were not chosen for this act of violence because we condone this racism, or because we are an enclave of extremism, we were chosen for the very fact that we are none of these things", she said.

The prime minister noted that it appeared the attacks appeared to have been well planned.

At least 49 people are dead in Christchurch, New Zealand, after shootings at two mosques.

"I can confirm that the individual who was taken into custody... is an Australian-born citizen", Morrison said at a press conference, aired at Periscope. "We stand in solidarity with the Muslim community", it continues. Our prayers for all affected and for Muslim friends and neighbours here.
