Ethiopian Airlines crash: 8 Americans among 157 killed

Several videos were shared on the internet claiming it documents the moment when the Ethiopian Airlines flight got crashed but they were all debunked.

"There was an AD [airworthiness directive] released by Boeing" that was circulated to the airline's pilots, GebreMariam said, referring to the emergency airworthiness directive that came out shortly after the Lion Air crash in Indonesian in October 2018. "Chief Exec's personal plea to Trump leaves more questions than answers", he said.

Flight ET 302 came down in a field soon after takeoff from Addis Ababa, creating a fireball in a crater.

The union said in a letter to the US Federal Aviation Administration that the incidents might undermine "full confidence" in the plane type.

The 737 Max 8 was first placed into commercial service in May 2017 by a Malaysian airline, Malindo Air, the twin-engine plane rising in popularity due to its fuel saving and long-range capability.

Gobena Monday told the media the airline had grounded all its Boeing 737 Max 8 out of caution as investigations into the fatal crash continue.

The MAX 8 was unveiled to great fanfare little over two years ago, but passengers around the world are now asking if the planes are safe after they were involved in two tragedies in less than six months.

"We remain confident in the safety and airworthiness of our fleet of more than 750 Boeing aircraft", Southwest said in a statement sent to CNN on Monday.

US officials said the devices suffered some damage but they were confident of some initial results within 24 hours of the data being downloaded.

According to flight tracking website Flightradar24, use of the 737 Max has plummeted around the world.

There is no evidence yet whether the two crashes are linked.

While Tewolde of Ethiopian Airlines said the cause of the crash was not yet clear, he cast doubt on the airworthiness of the 737 Max.

Canada has no plans to ground 737 MAX aircraft but is ready to act to suspend flights if new information emerges indicating there is a problem, Transport Minister Marc Garneau said.

In both the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes, the airplane immediately showed signs of trouble, with an erratic flight path that ascended and then descended before the airliner crashed minutes later. "In fact he was allowed to turn back", he said.

The new questions are surfacing months after USA pilots criticized Boeing in the wake of the Lion Air disaster, saying the plane maker had not provided enough information or training about a critical aspect of its new flight control system, as NPR's David Schaper reported in November.
