How Joe Flacco-to-Broncos trade impacts Packers in draft

Part of the reason why Denver decided on Flacco was his familiarity under center, according to Klis.

The Baltimore Ravens reportedly agreed to trade quarterback Joe Flacco to the Denver Broncos. He downed new Broncos coach Vic Fangio's 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII and, lest we forget, slayed Peyton Manning's Broncos and Tom Brady's Patriots in that same 2012 postseason, undoubtedly the best month of his National Football League career.

Joe Flacco #5 of the Baltimore Ravens throws a pass against the Carolina Panthers in the third quarter during their game at Bank of America Stadium on October 28, 2018 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that Denver will send a mid-round draft pick to the Ravens in return for Flacco.

The trade won't be processed for another month as the NFL league year begins March 13.

Flacco has $79 million remaining on his contract over the next three seasons.

Per OverTheCap.com, Flacco has a $26.5 million cap obligation for the 2019 season, and a $16 million cap hit were he to be released. They're now committed to carrying at least $28.5 million on the cap at the position, but would that dissuade them from adding another roughly $3.5 million (the cap charge for last year's 10th overall pick, Josh Rosen, was $3.2 million)? As a result, Denver appears ready to move on from one-year starter Case Keenum via trade or offseason release. He is to be paid $18.5 million next season, $20.25 million in 2020 and $24.25 million in 2021. None of the money is guaranteed, so the Broncos could cut him with no salary cap penalty at any point.

However, Flacco showed up when it counted the most during that 2012 season, and he offered up the best stretch of his career during those 2012 playoffs. The Broncos hold a top-10 pick.

On the field, this trade means the Packers will play against Flacco when the Broncos visit Lambeau Field next season.
