Militant Iran Taunts US on Revolution's 40th Birthday

Iran even holds an annual "Death to America" rally every November to commemorate the seizure of the U.S. Embassy in 1979, leading to a 444-day hostage crisis in which the Iranian regime held 52 Americans prisoner.

Iranians celebrated the 1979 overthrow of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was supported by the US, "waving Iranian flags, chanting "Death to America" and burning USA and Israeli flags", reported The Associated Press.

Last year, Iran cracked down on protests over poor living standards that posed the most serious challenge to its clerical elite since a 2009 uprising over disputed elections.

In a speech at Tehran's Azadi square, President Hassan Rouhani dismissed USA efforts to isolate Iran, saying US sanctions could not break the Islamic Republic.

An anchor on state television warned of hostile foreign media trying to downsize the participation of Iranians in the march but expressed confidence that "they would be confounded by the unprecedented level of attendance". He said, "The United States does not have the courage to shoot a single bullet at us". Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution initially inspired both Islamic militants and Islamists across the Mideast.
