Ilhan Omar called 'anti-Semitic' for tweet criticizing pro-Israel lobby

United States congresswoman Ilhan Omar tweeted out an apology on Monday, after posts she had written a day earlier were condemned as anti-Semitic.

Congresswoman Omar's use of anti-Semitic tropes and prejudicial accusations about Israel's supporters is deeply offensive.

"Sure, it's common knowledge that Republicans will-I mean, they do take campaign contributions from everything, everyone and every corporate PAC money and gas and oil industry money and all of these things", Haaland said.

The tweet was immediately criticized as being anti-Semitic, implying Jewish Americans use money to influence a sympathetic USA foreign policy toward Israel.

"That goes right into the anti-Semitic bias which has plagued the world for too long", King said.

Separately the Anti-Defamation League, an outside group formed to fight hate speech and anti-Semitism, called on top House leaders to take immediate action to condemn Rep. Omar's recent comments, citing a tweet where she suggested politicians were being influenced by donations from Jewish groups.

Freshmen Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) garnered considerable criticism from Democrats and Republicans over the weekend for comments she made regarding the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) deemed by many as anti-Semitic.

In response to Omar's tweet Sunday, a woman named Batya Ungar-Sargon, an opinion editor of the Forward, tweeted, "Would love to know who @IlhanMN thinks is paying American politicians to be pro-Israel, though I think I can guess".

Still, even some who agree with Omar's position on Israel argued that she could criticize the Israeli government or the pro-Israel lobbying establishment without using stereotypes that Jews find offensive.
