Full Senate to vote on Trump attorney general nominee Barr

Barr previously served as attorney general under President George H.W. Bush from November 1991 until January 1993. After hearings where Barr was asked about the DOJ's role and the Russian Federation investigation, his path to confirmation just got easier. His nomination will be headed to the Senate floor for a full vote. Since then, he's worked as a corporate lawyer in private practice. The Judiciary panel is set to vote on Barr's nomination Tuesday.

Democrats said they were particularly concerned that Barr would not specifically commit to letting the public see whatever report results from the special-counsel investigation into President Trump's campaign.

In confirmation hearings last month Barr said he would protect Mueller's investigation, and rejected Trump's characterisation of it as an illegal "witch hunt". "I do not think that any fair-minded person could call Bill Barr a political hack".

"I hope I'm wrong" about Barr, he said.

Meanwhile, Barr pledged during his hearing to release "as much as I can" of the special counsel findings.

"At a time when our shared principles of equal protection and civil rights for all are under assault, we need an Attorney General who will rise to the challenge of defending them".

Several other Republican lawmakers, in deciding to cast their votes for Barr, said he should release the special counsel findings to the fullest extent, while protecting national security secrets.

"Mr. Barr and I had a detailed discussion on his priorities for the Department of Justice, and on many issues important to Alaska". "On my watch, Bob will be allowed to finish his work".

The Republican president has repeatedly criticised the investigation as a "witch-hunt" and denies any collusion with Moscow.

Barr, the architect behind many tough-on-crime policies that led to disproportionately high rates of incarceration in the African-American community, acknowledged the disparate impacts of those laws and committed to fully enforcing the First Step Act, a piece of landmark criminal justice reform legislation signed into law by Trump in December.
