Sen. Coons: Trump's 'Closeness' to Putin Is 'Alarming'

A House Republican's line of questioning uncovered revelations that in May 2017 senior FBI leadership debated whether President Trump was directed by the Russian government to fire FBI Director James Comey, Fox News has learned.

When asked about the FBI's counterintelligence investigation of Trump as a potential threat to national security, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told CBS News in a taped interview that "the notion that President Trump is a threat to American national security is absolutely ludicrous".

The New York Times report on Friday cited unnamed former law enforcement officials and others familiar with the investigation. The Times reported Mueller also took over the counterintelligence investigation, but the paper said it is unclear whether that aspect of his investigation is ongoing. It is also significant because the investigation had run for 10 months and included a surveillance warrant on a trump campaign aide.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the story was so outrageously inaccurate it didn't even warrant a response.

According to another report by the Washington Post, Trump has taken unusual steps to hide the contents of his discussions with Putin.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), appearing on CBS' "Face the Nation", similarly dismissed the Post report, arguing that Trump's administration has been tough on Russian Federation and that concerns about the president's affinity for Putin are unfounded.

"When you get outside the Beltway, I don't see anyone concerned about this at all", Cruz told NBC News' Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press", according to NBC News.

Investigators led by former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief Robert Mueller are trying to establish whether there was any collusion between Mr Trump's campaign team and the Russian state to help get him elected.

Pompeo: The Idea Trump’s a Threat to National Security Is ‘Absolutely Ludicrous’
In a strongly worded reaction, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said, "This is absurd". Mr Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, told the Times that he had no knowledge of the inquiry.

Wintry mix for metro area throughout day; heavy snow above 6,000 feet
The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities has issued a Winter Weather Advisory starting at 6 p.m. During the day Friday, rain will surge northeastward across the southern and central Plains.

There remains no detailed record, even in classified files, of face-to-face meetings between Trump and Putin from five locations over the past two years, the report said.

Trump has defended himself against such reports, arguing, inaccurately, that he has taken a hardline stance against Russian Federation.

"Anybody could have listened to that meeting", he said.

Schumer announced the decision early Sunday, saying there are too many questions about why the Treasury Department is cutting a break to three companies associated with Oleg Deripaska.

Trump himself, characteristically, took to Twitter on Saturday to discuss his firing of Comey.

Schumer, however, contends the Russian oligarch maintains significant influence on these companies, including the aluminum manufacturing giant Rusal, and said it's important the sanctions remain in place while Mueller's investigation proceeds. At the same time, & as I have often said, getting along with Russian Federation is a good thing, not a bad thing. "I mean, it's so ridiculous", he told Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, without directly denying the Post story.

"Are you now or have you ever worked for Russia, Mr. President?"Jeanine Pirro of Fox News asked him in an interview Saturday".

And Trump's former presidential campaign chair, Paul Manafort, has been convicted in one case brought by Mueller and pleaded guilty in another, over financial crimes related to his work in Ukraine before the 2016 campaign, and for witness tampering.
