Huawei fires top executive charged with espionage

An arrest of a Huawei executive in Poland for espionage might corroborate those concerns.

Huawei in December said it expects to see a 21 per cent rise in revenue for 2018 despite what it called "unfair treatment" around the world, as several countries have banned Huawei telecommunications technology. "On January 8, they were detained, the Internal Security Agency carried out procedural acts, and searches were carried out in many places related to their activities", deputy minister of the special services coordinator Maciej Wąsik told Polsat News.

Recently, the Canadian government launched a new security assessment of Huawei's 5G technology a year ago, and at least two large Canadian operators have indicated that they will launch small-scale investigations.

Poland is Huawei's headquarters for Central and Eastern Europe and the Nordic region. They took "documents and electronic data" from Huawei's office, said The Wall Street Journal.

On Thursday, a Warsaw court agreed to prosecutors' requests to arrest the two men for three months. Further indictments are expected, he said.

TVP reported that the men have proclaimed their innocence, but Zaryn said he could not confirm that.

TVP, which is government-controlled media, identified the arrested Chinese man as Weijing W., saying he was a director in Poland at Huawei.

He is a graduate of the Beijing University of Foreign Studies.

He had access to key information, including the functioning of SŁR, the Polish Government Communication Network which essentially allows secret transmission of information to high-ranking state officials.

The company has attracted even greater scrutiny following the arrest of its chief financial officer last month in Canada, CNN reported.

The two Huawei arrests follows Huawei being blocked from involvement in the 5G rollouts in a string of western nations, including Australia, New Zealand and Japan, while intelligence services in Britain and Canada have also announced reviews into Huawei. It said he also went by the Polish first name of Stanislaw and had previously worked at the Chinese consulate in Gdansk.

The Chinese technology giant is facing increasing pressure across the European Union amid growing concerns that Beijing could use Huawei's gear for spying - something the company has always denied.
