Former Trump Lawyer Cohen to Testify Publicly Before Congress

Michael Cohen, a former personal lawyer for President Donald Trump, has agreed to provide testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on February 7, Chairman Elijah Cummings said in a statement on Thursday.

Cohen also pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about how long the proposed Trump Tower Moscow project discussions extended into the 2016 campaign when he testified before the congressional intelligence committees in 2017.

Michael Cohen wil testify to Congress on February 7.

"Mr Cohen has expressed an interest in telling his personal story in open session, and we welcome his testimony before the Committee on Oversight and Reform", he said.

Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina, the House Freedom Caucus chairman and a close GOP ally of Trump on the oversight panel, hinted at the acrimony Cohen should expect from the Republican questioners.

Mueller's team in court filings wrote that Cohen provided "useful information concerning certain discrete Russia-related matters core to its investigation".

A hearing could delve into the financial deals of the Trump Organisation as well as the Trump 2016 election campaign's dealings with Russian Federation, already being probed by the team of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

"The first move by House Democrats that is certain to draw the ire of President Trump". The campaign finance violations, which implicated the president in felony crimes, were for the hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, and Karen McDougal over alleged extra-marital affairs Trump had years prior.

Known as Trump's "fixer", part of Cohen's job was to make the president's problems go away - by any means necessary.

But because he pleaded guilty he was never cross-examined on details of his dealings with Mr Trump.

In a December interview, Cummings, D-Md., said on CNN's "State of the Union" that he wanted Cohen to appear before Congress as soon as this month and signaled that he viewed it as a matter of extreme effect.

During his visit to the border on Thursday in McAllen, Texas, Trump was asked whether he was concerned over Cohen's public testimony, which likely will get wall-to-wall coverage on cable news networks. "I want to make clear that we have no interest in inappropriately interfering with any ongoing criminal investigations, and to that end, we are in the process of consulting with Special Counsel Mueller's office".

Cummings emphasized that the Committee has no intention to meddle in the investigation into allegations of Trump-Russia collusion and Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 USA presidential election, and will, therefore, consult with the Special Counsel's Office and provide additional information in the next weeks.

The oversight hearing may not be Cohen's only appearance.

"The request still stands", Burr added, regardless of any public testimony Mr. Cohen may give on other issues".

Says Joe, a New Jersey resident: "I think he (Trump) is going to resign".
