De Blasio 'Guarantees Healthcare' for all 600,000 Uninsured New Yorkers

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that he will be launching a plan to guarantee health care coverage for all residents, which includes illegal immigrants living in the city.

New Yorkers will soon have access to comprehensive healthcare, available to everyone, regardless of their income and/or immigration status, through a newly announced program called NYC Care.

"That would be comparable to what Gavin Newsom has proposed", Calhoon said, " and it would be very exciting for NY to be in the lead on making sure that all adults have access". "It would protect them from having to choose between losing pay and going to their kid's graduation or the funeral of a loved one", Sonn said. It's going to be for the first time a guarantee of health care. "Today we celebrate our city's relentless commitment to accessible, high-quality healthcare", Palacio continued.

While some have expressed concerns about the decision to pay for the care of undocumented residents, many couldn't move past the improbable math provided by the city in its explanation about how it will pay for the coverage.

It will also guarantee health care access to those ineligible for insurance, including illegal immigrants who live in NY.

'We also have a way to provide direct health care to a lot of our neighbors who are undocumented, they're still part of our community and they need health care'.

New Yorkers will be able to access the program through the city's website or by calling 311, and tax increases will not be necessary to fund it, the mayor said.

De Blasio first touted NYC Care during an interview Tuesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe".

Mayor Bill de Blasio cited his "socialistic impulse" in describing an ideal world where New York City government has control over all land and building development in his city. And because more people will get preventive care, the city might actually save money, he added.

The program, NYC Care, will launch this summer in the Bronx.

The New York Times reported that de Blasio's announcements come as the New York state legislature, which is now controlled by Democrats, begins examining its own statewide universal healthcare system. The city intends to set up a 24/7 help line to assist people with their after-hours needs as well.

Dr. Mitchell Katz, the CEO of the public hospital system, said the city will hire additional primary-care doctors to meet an expected growth in demand. He said giving people the primary care they need and helping them avoid the emergency room will help the financial burden for patients.

Mitchell Katz, MD, president and CEO of NYC Health and Hospitals, the city's public healthcare network, noted that prescription drugs are one thing most people are anxious about being able to afford, but "under this program, pharmaceutical costs are covered".
