Gender equality at work more than 200 years off: WEF

However, despite this impressive performance, Bahrain's overall ranking saw a slight drop from 126th to 132th place globally, this is due to weakened performance in the other three pillars measured in the report. To date, said the WEF, there was still a 32pc average gender gap that remained to be closed.

At the current rate of change, the data suggest it will take 108 years before the overall gender gap is closed and 202 years to bring about parity in the workplace.

Interestingly, India has the second-largest artificial intelligence (AI) workforce but one of the largest AI gender gaps, with only 22 per cent of roles filled by women.

The rise reflected narrower wage gaps and an increase in women's labor participation rate.

The Global Gender Gap Index ranks 149 countries on health, education, economic and political indicators, including wage equality, educational attainment, and representation in national government.

Categorised as the lowest-ranked country in South Asia, Pakistan closed 55 per cent of its overall gender gap as compared to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka which were the top-ranked countries in the region, having closed just over 72pc and almost 68pc of their overall gender gap, respectively.

When it comes to education, the report estimated the gender gap can be fully closed in just 14 years, while the time to close the gap in health and survival remains undefined.

Robots and Lack of Child Care Leave Women's Wages Centuries Behind

The United States ranks 19th out of 149 countries on economic parity between women and men.

Within the global headline figures, it is possible to perceive a number of trends that are defining the gender gap in 2018.

"On the other end of the spectrum, nearly one-quarter of the countries assessed have closed less than 10 per cent of their gender gap, and the four worst-performing countries - Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman and Yemen - have yet to bridge over 97 per cent of their gap".

Norway enjoys a near-even distribution of male and female workers, with many women in positions of power. "In terms of political empowerment, the progress achieved over the past decade has started to reverse". Only in seven countries are women paid more than 80% of what men are paid for the same work.

Women with AI skills are more likely to be employed as data analysts and information managers, while men tend to land in more lucrative and senior positions such as engineering heads and chief executives.

"More than ever, can not afford to companies, to waive the skills, ideas and perspectives of half of humanity", said WEF founder Klaus Schwab in the report.

Even though Jordan dropped three ranks since previous year, its ranking has improved in two of the four categories, climbing up six spots in the "Educational Attainment" index to achieve a rank among the top 50 countries worldwide at 42nd.
