Mueller: Russia sought 'synergy' with Trump campaign in 2015

USA prosecutors said on Friday President Donald Trump directed his personal lawyer to make illegal hush payments to two women ahead of the 2016 election, and also detailed a previously unknown attempt by a Russian to help the Trump campaign.

The "payments" were those made to two alleged Trump mistresses during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The meeting did not take place.

It noted that Cohen cooperated with its probe but described his lies to Congress about his efforts to build a Trump skyscraper in Moscow as "deliberate and premeditated".

Trump's praise comes amid the federal prosecutors' sentencing recommendation for the president's former attorney, Michael Cohen, and another filing detailing how his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, breached his plea agreement with Mueller and the FBI.

Cohen has pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about negotiations between Trump's business and powerful Russians about a prospective Trump Tower in Moscow, a building that ultimately was never built.

Mueller said that discussions about the potential Moscow development were relevant to the investigation because they occurred "at a time of sustained efforts by the Russian government to interfere with the US presidential election".

The filings followed a sentencing memo earlier this week regarding Trump's former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who Mueller praised for providing "substantial" cooperation and argued for no prison time.

Prosecutors working for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY based in Manhattan asked a judge to impose a sentence that reflects a "modest downward variance" from the potential maximum of 63 months in prison that Cohen faces.

The federal prosecutors in the NY case described Cohen in their filing as being motivated by "personal greed" and said he "repeatedly used his power and influence for deceptive ends" in pressing the judge to reject Cohen's request he be spared prison.

In a separate filing on Friday, Mueller outlined how Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, breached his plea agreement with Mueller and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Trump repeated his criticism again on Friday and said on Twitter that his attorneys have already begun work on a rebuttal to Mueller in case the special counsel's report is damaging to Trump and becomes public.

But he has also been investigated for his possible role in alleged campaign collusion with Russian Federation during the election.

The president has called Cohen a liar and "weak person".

Representatives for the U.S. Justice Department and Mueller's office declined to comment on Trump's tweets.
