O2 network outage hits Herefordshire

United Kingdom customers have reported not being able to use mobile data to access the internet and other services on the company's network.

Tens of millions of smartphone users in Britain lost internet access today after a software glitch brought down O2's data network.

The fragility of the increasingly connected systems that keep modern, Western nations running was underlined Thursday when major telecoms network O2 ceased to transmit mobile data from around 0530 GMT.

O2 said: "Our technical teams are investigating reports of issues when using data".

Their technical teams are working on the issue as a "high priority" and updates will be given throughout the day. "We are working closely with the remaining customers that are still experiencing issues".

Some users have also reported problems with making voice calls, despite claims from O2 that voice services are unaffected.

Borje Ekholm said: "The faulty software that has caused these issues is being decommissioned and we apologise not only to our customers but also to their (other network's) customers".

However, when the network was down for seven hours in 2015, the company did not offer compensation to all customers, instead saying payouts would be assessed on a "case-by-case" basis. The difficulties were first reported at about 05:30 this morning.

The network outage isn't just forcing British mobile users to put down their phones and talk to one another. According to two people directly involved, an issue relating to software in the systems provided by Ericsson has been identified. Our technical teams are working extremely hard to resolve this. Work is now ongoing to fix the fault and customers are being encouraged to use wi-fi where possible.
