GOP senators condemn Saudi crown prince for ordering Khashoggi killing

CIA Director Gina Haspel will brief US lawmakers Tuesday on the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker.

"If the crown prince went in front of a jury he would be convicted in thirty minutes", Bob Corker, the Republican chair of the Senate foreign relations committee reportedly told journalists immediately after the Haspel meeting.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, said Congress is looking for an "appropriate" response to Khashoggi's murder, but said the us needs to maintain its relationship with Saudi Arabia.

Menendez spoke to reporters on Tuesday as he left a closed-door briefing for some Senate committee leaders and Senate leaders by CIA Director Gina Haspel.

While acknowledging the country's long relationship with Saudi Arabia, senators have said the murder can't be excused.

"There's not a smoking gun; there's a smoking saw", said Graham, referring to reports that Khashoggi's body was dismembered by a bone saw after he was killed at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

New Jersey Democrat Bob Menendez said he was "more convinced" than he was before that the US needed to reconsider its close ties to Saudi Arabia in the wake of the Central Intelligence Agency briefing, while South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham told reporters that "it's not a smoking gun, it's a smoking saw", in reference to Khashoggi's alleged dismemberment using such a tool.

Khashoggi was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.

He argued that Pompeo and Mattis needed to be asked specifically if they disagreed with the CIA's conclusion there was "no smoking gun" to link the crown prince to the murder, as Mattis has claimed. The bill is pending further action on the Senate floor.

Trump has said it's unknowable whether the Crown Prince was actually behind it - despite the Central Intelligence Agency concluding this with "high confidence" - while Pompeo said last week that there was no "direct reporting" implicating him. The kingdom implicated some of the crown prince's associates in the murder and Saudi authorities later detained several high-ranking officials.

Trump has repeatedly said the evidence doesn't conclusively prove that bin Salman was involved in the assassination and suggested that he believes the prince's denials over the conclusions of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Senators were upset that Haspel did not appear with Mattis and Pompeo, which led to Tuesday's session. "The United States intends to remain a steadfast partner of Saudi Arabia to ensure the interests of our country, Israel and all other partners in the region".

Graham wrote in the Journal that "it is important for Congress to signal that there is no excuse for recent Saudi behavior".

He added: "We're looking for an appropriate response that doesn't completely fracture the relationship". "We're with Saudi Arabia".

That reluctance to blame the crown prince has enraged some Republicans.

The Senate could take a vote on proceeding to the Yemen resolution next week.
