George H.W. Bush lies in state at U.S. Capitol

CNN repeatedly attacked President Donald Trump on Monday for putting politics aside and paying respects to former President George H.W. Bush in a segment that exemplified the network's willingness to criticize the president for ratings and not for his actions. The 95-year-old Dole, who uses a wheelchair, was helped to his feet by an aide and saluted the former commander in chief.

The Texas Republican, who served as the 41st US president from 1989 to 1993, died Friday at age 94.

On his 18th birthday in 1942, the Texas Republican enlisted in the Navy, deferring his acceptance to Yale University so he could fight in World War II, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

The next month, Bush paid tribute to the beloved matriarch when he attended the musical Hamilton, which the former first lady had always wanted to see.

A spokeswoman for Melania Trump noted the tour happened but did not offer any details.

Trump then saluted Bush, a gesture belying the history of antipathy between the Republican president and the Bush family.

An 11 a.m. state funeral for the former president will be held at the Washington National Cathedral that day.

The military honor guard hefted his casket up the East Front steps and into the Rotunda - the same room he strolled as a congressman in the late 1960s, and which he later strode through in 1989, after taking the presidential oath of office on the Capitol's West Front steps.

"Here lies a great man", said Rep. Paul Ryan, the House speaker, and "a gentle soul".

President George W. Bush, son of the late president and himself "No. 43" in the line of presidents, led the Bush family in the ceremonial duties at the arrival of the casket and the early commemorations.

Although Bush's funeral services are suffused with the flourishes accorded presidents, by his choice they will not include a formal funeral procession through downtown Washington. He will be laid to rest next to his wife, Barbara Bush, who died in April of this year.

The commemorations conclude on Thursday, when the casket will be flown back to Houston for a service at St. Martin's Episcopal Church and buried at his presidential library in College Station.

"After Mrs. Bush's death, general companionship was a big part of Sully's job", John Miller, president and CEO of America's VetDogs, said in a phone interview. Flags on public buildings are flying at half-staff for 30 days.
