Trump's Ex-Lawyer Michael Cohen Pleads Guilty to Lying to Congress

The latest iterative step in Robert Mueller's Gambino-style rollup of the Trump campaign is Michael Cohen's statement in federal court that he lied to Congress about his dealings with Russian Federation.

The negotiations about building a Russian Trump Tower continued as late as June 2016 - the same month Trump's oldest son met in Manhattan with a Kremlin-connected lawyer - even though Cohen told two congressional committees past year that the talks ended that January.

Michael Cohen, former personal attorney to President Donald Trump, exits federal court on Thursday in New York City.

He also criticized Cohen, saying he was "a weak person and what he's trying to do is get a reduced sentence".

In 2015, BuzzFeed News reported in May, Cohen met with sometimes Trump adviser Felix Sater about the possibility of licensing the Trump name for a massive tower in Moscow, potentially the tallest building in Europe. Now he says that they in fact continued until June of that year, by which point Trump had effectively won the Republican nomination for the presidency.

When asked why he would hire Cohen if he's an untrustworthy and weak person, Trump said "a long time ago, he did me a favor".

"This basically reflects that Michael Cohen is cooperating on the central focus of the Mueller investigation, which is the conspiracy between the Russian government and the Trump campaign", former federal prosecutor Nick Akerman told TPM. "I said I would confirm and revert".

Promising to "put family and country first", Cohen has agreed to fully cooperate with prosecutors.

Kaljulaid calls Russia's attack on Ukrainian naval vessels war in Europe
In his first public remarks since the confrontation, President Donald Trump did not specifically call out Russia's behavior. Russian officials say the Ukrainian vessels made an unauthorized passage through Russian territorial waters.

He pleaded guilty to a slew of financial crimes, including campaign finance violations stemming from hush money payments Cohen made to women on Trump's behalf. The committee then canceled the meeting with Cohen, upset that his remarks, which reiterated what he had said in his letter to Congress in August, had been leaked to the press. The 52-year-old had always been one of Trump's most loyal and ardent aides, and once claimed he'd "take a bullet" for the president.

Cohen worked on the deal with Felix Sater, a Russian-born developer and United States citizen, who served as a deal broker on the project.

Cohen worked as a top lawyer to Trump and his real estate company for a decade.

During and after the presidential campaign, Trump insisted that he did not have business dealings in Russian Federation.

While Trump strongly condemned the targeting of Cohen, the relationship between the two quickly devolved.

But after pleading guilty, he said his conscience required him to tell the truth about Trump.

It's unclear if Trump provided answers on that specific topic. Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chair Mark Warner (D-VA) called for Cohen "to come back and share more" with Congress.

Cohen is set to be sentenced for lying to Congress on December 12.
