UN Officials: Caravan Rhetoric Violates 'Right to Mental Health' of Migrants

Members of the "migrant caravan" now camped out in Tijuana, Mexico, just across the border from San Diego, California, told MSNBC late Tuesday that they were told making entrance into the United States would be much easier and that they're ready to make the long journey back home. Some migrants threw rocks, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers responded with tear gas to disrupt the crowds.

The use of tear gas during Sunday's events have also sparked debate. Rodney Scott, the chief Border Patrol agent in San Diego, California, just north of the Mexican border, said agents were not seriously injured.

The potential fight comes as a new study published on Tuesday estimates the population of unauthorized immigrants in the United States fell to 10.7 million in 2016, its lowest level since 2004, due largely to a decline in the number of people coming from Mexico.

Most of the migrants have been from Honduras, the United Nations says, but increasing numbers of migrants are joining from Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador.

Sunday's incident began with a march to the border that organizers said would be peaceful. The border patrol agent explained that after the caravan had made it through forces in Mexico, it approached the east side of the San Ysidro port of entry.

The San Ysidro border post across from Tijuana - the busiest crossing on the US-Mexico border - was closed to traffic and pedestrians for several hours following the incident.

The U.S. Border Patrol said most of those assembled at the border were economic migrants who would not qualify for asylum.

Thousands of Central American migrants are digging in for a long haul at a filthy, overcrowded sports complex in sight of the United States, while a small number have opted to return home after clashes with border forces dimmed hopes of crossing.

The President also told Politico that he "was in no mood" to reach a compromise with Democrats on a large-scale immigration deal and wants to wait to form a compromise on "Dreamers" - undocumented immigrants brought to the USA as children - until after current court challenges to the program are decided.

A Peaceful Demonstration Turns Ugly at US Border

The ministry said Mexico is committed to protecting the human rights and security of the migrants and reiterated that tight cooperation was needed to deal with the migrant situation "with a focus on shared responsibility". He said CBP does not have rubber bullets in its inventory on the border.

He also pushed back at outrage that U.S. border agents had used tear gas to disperse migrants who had tried to force their way across the border, calling the substance "very safe".

At a roundtable in MS later Monday, Trump seemed to acknowledge that children were affected.

But images of crying children in diapers and bare feet running from plumes of gas struck a nerve again - not unlike the images of weeping, frightened children who had been separated from their parents over the summer.

The Associated Press reported that that the woman told agents she was not part of the migrant caravan, which had traveled from Central America to the U.S. McAleenan said he was not aware of any successful illegal entries by caravan members into the US.

With too many to fit into shelters in a city used to receiving deportees and migrants, the caravan, which had traveled about 3,000 miles (4,800 km) since mid-October, was ushered into the complex to wait until US and Mexican authorities settled on how to deal with it.

The migrants' presence has drawn demonstrators - for and against them - and threats from Trump to close the US-Mexico border.

Meanwhile, Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum issued a call for help from Mexico's federal government.
