Gov. Rick Scott visited Pasco County on Monday and begged residents to prepare as Hurricane Michael built steam heading toward Florida's Gulf Coast.

The Category 1 hurricane, as of 5 p.m. EDT Monday, is forecast to possibly strengthen to a Category 3 with maximum sustained winds topping 111 miles per hour near its center of rotation before reaching the Gulf Coast on Wednesday morning at Panama City Beach, Fla.

A hurricane warning covered Florida's Gulf Coast from the Alabama state line to the Suwannee River.

In the storm's wake, the NHC said, "Michael is expected to produce heavy rainfall and flash flooding over portions of western Cuba and the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico during the next couple of days".

Pfaff said the storm is still worth noting, as it will bring high winds and heavy rains to an area still recovering from the last storm.

"Our goal is to have at least 150 crew members pre-staged in Tallahassee tomorrow in advance of the storm's landfall with the remainder prepared to arrive Thursday", Zubaly said in a prepared statement.

ABC News added that The National Hurricane Center estimates that the storm surge from Michael could be anywhere between seven and 11 feet high in some areas.

"The majority of impact on our area will be Tuesday night and Wednesday", said Paul Close, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Ruskin. A major hurricane is defined as Category 3 or greater on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with sustained winds of 111mph or greater.
