The new Apple Watch has a heart monitor and the FDA approves

Yesterday at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, Apple Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams unveiled the Apple Watch Series 4.

Apple upgraded its watchOS, and the physical design of its Apple Watch and the newly improved device was showcased in the iPhone XS launch event. The back of the watch is now transparent to radio waves, which means that it will get even more reliable cellular service.

The Apple Watch Series 4 has been completely re-designed and re-engineered from its Series 3. It's the NPU that really turbo-charges the new iPhones.

The device's new health features are sure to increase Apple's dominance of the smartwatch category - and they underscore the company's focus.

With just hours to go before its latest hardware reveal event, Apple has seemingly spoiled every surprise that it had left by updating files on its site.

What Apple Watch can do the ECG is, of course, fun, but whether you get pleasure from this process as prisock around your heart and women yelling at you "don't move!"? The company said the new iPhones would start at USD 750, USD 1,000 and USD 1,100.

"A new workout API simplifies workout app development, ensures improved data accuracy, and enables more robust app performance".

Apple's new iPhone Xs Max will be its most expensive mass-produced model to date, with starting prices of $1,519 in the US.

Significantly, Apple said the new watch had a faster processor and better health and motion sensors.

Time almost up: Fierce Hurricane Florence aims at Southeast - Story | WFLD
Hurricane Florence will be one of the biggest storms to make landfall along the United States eastern seaboard in decades. Water kills more people in hurricanes than wind, and the rain and storm surge will make Florence extremely risky .

The big Apple announcement this week was clearly an iPhone or three, but it wasn't alone, because there's also a new wearable coming, too.

So when can you buy the new gear and how much will it cost?

The ECG app will be coming out later this year and will be available only in the United States of America (for now).

Phillips stressed that patients should not think that they can use a heart monitoring app without a physician's input.

"And the watch is unambiguously the most personal product we make", said Ive, who joined Apple more than 25 years ago and first made his mark with the candy-colored iMacs of the 1990s. If after such a tumble the watch detects no movement, it will assume you're out cold and need help.

If you haven't responded within a minute - perhaps you hit your head and blacked out -the watch can call 911 using your nearby phone or its own cellular transmitter and also send a notification with your location to your preset emergency contacts.

Reaction was mixed with some deeming the entry into the medical device world as notable while others dismissing the FDA-clearance as a non-story. The experience is supposed to take about 30 seconds, with the ECG classifying the results as either a normal "sinus rhythm" or AFib.

The watch will also alert the wearer if it detects unusually high or low heart rates that could be a sign of a serious condition. The reason for this is that the FDA's Indian equivalent is the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), and chances are that Apple hasn't received the certification for it in India yet.

Apple's formal entrance into medical devices brings heft to the idea of tracking health with consumer wearables. But cardiologists aren't yet convinced that it will be a net positive for their patients.
