Dutch court says Ryanair pilots' strike can go ahead

This known as rerouting and even if that flight costs Ryanair more, they can't pass that cost on to you.

Ingolf Schumacher, pay negotiator at Germany's Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union, said pilots had to be prepared for "a very long battle". The airline has been hit with strikes by flight attendants in Spain, Portugal and Belgium.

Ryanair DAC is an Irish low-priced airline founded in 1984, headquartered in Swords, Dublin, Ireland, with its primary operational bases at Dublin and London Stansted airports.

Ryanair, which carries some 130 million passengers annually, averted widespread Christmas strikes last year by agreeing to recognise trade unions for the first time in its 33-year history.

The dispute regards negotiations between VC and Ryanair around a remuneration agreement and a more universal collective agreement, which considers aspects such as rostering.

DW reporter Lars Halter at Berlin-Schönefeld airport said the situation was "very calm".

The walkout by German and Dutch pilots piles pressure on the Irish budget airline after pilots in Ireland, Sweden and Belgium also vowed to strike on August 10, promising major disruptions for thousands of holidaymakers.

"Affected passengers should not let themselves be deceived by Ryanair's false statement, as all strikes of airline staff are not considered to be extraordinary circumstances anymore, which would free the airline from their obligation to financial compensation of up to €600 per passenger".

About 55,000 passengers are understood to have been told of cancellations on 400 flights - 250 in Germany alone - out of the scheduled 2,400, thus disrupting what is set to be one of the busiest days for airlines.

Ryanair, which flies in 37 countries and carried 130 million passengers previous year, has repeatedly said it remains open to further talks with pilot representatives. This can mean staff based in other European states are unable to gain access to state benefits.

He added that Ryanair categorically ruled out any such increases at talks.

Pilots in five countries are now taking industrial action, affecting around 50,000 passengers during the peak of the summer holiday season.

Unions are pushing for better pay and conditions at Ryanair and want collective labour contracts governed by local laws, rather than Irish ones.

The airline has responded to the Irish action by cutting its winter fleet there by 20 percent and putting over 300 employees on preliminary notice.
