Trump releases ‘very nice’ letter from Kim Jong Un

On Thursday at the truce village of Panmunjom, the North didn't show up for a meeting with the United States that was meant to discuss the repatriation of the remains of USA soldiers killed during the 1950-53 Korean War, one of four major agreements in the joint statement Kim signed with Trump at their summit on June 12 in Singapore.

U.S. President Donald Trump shared what he said were letters Thursday from North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, saying "great progress being made!".

President Donald Trump has tweeted a letter him from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un heralding "epochal progress" in US-North Korea relations.

Trump in the tweet called the letter, which was dated July 6 and provided in Korean along with an English translation, a "nice note" from Kim.

Mr Pompeo had said progress was made during his two-day visit to Pyongyang.

While it was not immediately clear why the North Korean delegation skipped the meeting, the apparent snub reinforced skepticism around Pyongyang's willingness to commit to denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

The ceremony came a day after talks between the United States and North Korea over the return of USA war remains were postponed.

The letter from Kim made no references to denuclearization, a key US objective in its negotiations with North Korea.

The Pentagon says Pyongyang has indicated several times they have as many as 200 sets of remains that could be those of USA soldiers who died in the war.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters on Saturday that Pompeo, though not meeting Kim during his stay, did leave a letter from Trump to Kim in Pyongyang.

Snarling orange "Trump baby" blimp flies outside British parliament
In a 1997 interview , just weeks after Diana's death, U.S. radio host Howard Stern asked Trump if he "could have nailed her". However, the meeting with Queen Elizabeth on his first visit to Britain as USA president still seems to rankle.

Sunday's talks are expected to involve officials from the Pentagon and the UN Command, which commanded US-led allied forces during the war and is involved in maintaining the armistice that ended the fighting in 1953.

The letter made no mention of North Korea's plans to denuclearize.

In the wake of the Trump-Kim meeting, a senior official at the Foreign Ministry said it would not be surprising for a Japan-North Korea summit to take place on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum, to be held in Russian Federation in September.

However, if the United States or North Korea failed to "keep the promises made by their leaders in front of the worldwide community, they will have to face the judgment of the global community", the South Korean president added.

South Korean news agency Yonhap and JoongAng Ilbo suggest the North Koreans did not attend the meeting because the American representatives were civilian government members, not soldiers.

What's next for Secretary of State Pompeo's negotiations with North Korea?

"We were ready", one official said. Recent reports suggest that the North has continued to expand infrastructure at nuclear and missile sites and that USA intelligence assesses that the North does not intend to fully denuclearize. "But if it wants to be involved but is excluded, China will try to delay the process by wielding influence over North Korea", he said.

The source with knowledge of the talks told CNN that Trump asked whether Kim knew where he'd gotten the nickname, and Kim said no. Trump asked Kim if he had heard of the Elton John song.

South Korean president Moon Jae-in said on Friday he is confident a diplomatic thaw between Washington and Pyongyang will continue, despite "bumps and bruises" on the path to denuclearising the Korean peninsula.
