Alibaba launches research arm for AI, quantum computing, and other emerging tech

An advisory board, consisting of researchers and educators from various top universities such as MIT will guide the program.

China's technology conglomerate, Alibaba Group Holding, will increase more than twice its research and development spending (up to United States dollars 15 billion) over the next three years to develop the next generation of technology, boost its growing business and explore ambitious projects, which could change the industries.

Announced at the Computing Conference 2017 in China, Alibaba's CEO Jack Ma discussed his thoughts on the Academy and why it is a good approach to the future.

The Chinese e-commerce company, Alibaba Group Holding Limited, announced today about the company's plan to plow in more than $15 billion over the next 3 years into a global program called Alibaba DAMO Academy. The initial pool of 100 researchers and scientists will be recruited from all over the world. The globally-distributed research labs will will focus on both foundational and disruptive technology research including data intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), fintech, quantum computing and human-machine interaction.

As part of the program, Alibaba intends to build seven new R&D labs across the U.S., Russia, China, Israel, and Singapore. The additional R&D investment is designed to help the business deliver on its goal of serving 2 billion customers and create 100 million job opportunities in 20 years.

The Chinese giant and its affiliates have undergone a rapid expansion in the past year, bringing it into direct competition with USA e-retailer Amazon.com Inc., as well as global payments, cloud and logistics firms. For example, Alibaba will work with the University of California, Berkeley's Real-Time Intelligent Secure Execution lab (RISELab) on its work into secure computing. "We aim to discover breakthrough technologies that will enable greater efficiency, network security and ecosystem synergy for end-users and businesses everywhere", Jeff Zhang said in a statement.
