J Street launches campaign against Trump ahead of Iran deal announcement

Iran says the nuclear deal does not require it to restrict its missile programme.

- IRGC is Iran's most powerful security force.

Iran did give up nearly all of the larger and more critical aspects of its nuclear weapons program before the JCPOA's Implementation Day on January 16, 2016. The UN inspectors have verified Iranian compliance with the terms. United States officials insist this will not sink the deal itself but open the way for Congress to possibly develop new measures to punish other aspects of Iran's behaviour.

If Trump does not certify that Iran is in compliance, the US Congress will have 60 days to decide whether to re-impose sanctions waived under the deal.

The deadline for recertification is October 15.

In fact, the Financial Times article notes that even Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton, arguably the strongest voice of congressional opposition to the nuclear deal, is not pushing for the immediate re-imposition of economic sanctions after the potential decertification.

Since the historic deal went into effect, the International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic's compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA.

On Monday, former Israeli Defense Forces military chief Amos Yadlin, who is also the head of the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), co-authored an essay with his INSS fellow and former National Security Council official Avner Golov, urging the US President against leaving the agreement.

Sen. Bob Corker seemed to speak for many in Washington - including a lot of Republicans - when he unloaded on President Trump in an interview with The New York Times, in which he described the president as "reckless" and his White House as a "reality show".

"In contrast to this view, the other ones believe that Iran must stand up to any United States action, and by treading the path it has already taken, mobilize the world against Washington's unilateral decision through an active diplomacy".

During his speech at the UN General Assembly on September 19, the US president described the JCPOA as "the worst and most one-sided transaction Washington has ever entered into", a characterization he often used during his presidential campaign.

The minister added that Germany was ready to increase pressure on Iran, with diplomatic means, but that "we do not want to see this agreement damaged".

According to the spokesman, the U.S. shouldn't pressure Iran while negotiating regional issues.

The head of Iran's nuclear agency warned the United States on Tuesday against undermining the 2015 nuclear deal, saying worldwide nonproliferation efforts as well as Washington's global standing would suffer as a result. "This runs counter to the view of all the European countries that participated in the deal as well as the EU".

As it now appears, the Trump administration, which is authorised to call for new sanctions under CAATSA, as well as developing a strategy to confront the IRGC's expanding influence in the region, will likely designate the IRGC as a terrorist organisation. Trump's concerns about Iranian support for the "three Hs", Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis, will be exacerbated if the deal is undone, as Iran will have an even greater incentive to oppose U.S. policies.

Almost all had the same concerns: Benefits from the 2015 accord have yet to reach Iran's 80 million people despite its government signing billion-dollar airplane deals.
