Earl Melchert Gives Reward to Kidnapped Girl He Rescued

He was presented on Friday with a check for the reward money - which included $2,000 from the girl's family - after which he went to dinner with them, according to the Times.

"What a retirement present", he said, "to hand over some money to people that really need it".

"The family needs the money". "To me, yeah, that's a lot of money, but they need it way [more] than I do".

Melchert, who has retired since he found the escaped girl running across a field on his property in Alexandria, Minnesota, reportedly said he wasn't even supposed to be home that afternoon, on September 5, but had returned from work to retrieve a gas can.

That's when the 65-year-old spotted a figure moving in the distance.

"I just want to say that the good lord put me in that spot", Melchert told Block and her family on Friday.

It was that decision that would change the course of numerous lives - especially that of a 15-year-old Jasmine Block. She then ran towards Melchert's vehicle across his field.

"It'd been on the news, it'd been online".

"I knew it was her as soon as I saw her face". She's probably the strongest person I have ever known'.

Last week, about a month after the girl's escape, Wyffels called Melchert, commending him for his role in saving the teenager.

In court documents obtained by the outlet, she detailed the harrowing experience revealing that she was restrained, beaten and locked in a closet by Thomas Barker, Steven Powers and Joshua Holby, her trio of alleged captors.

The three suspects have since been located and charged with kidnapping, criminal sexual conduct, assault and false imprisonment, Fox News reported. They have not yet entered pleas or retained attorneys who could comment on their behalf.

The teen swam across part of a lake near Melchert's house after she was unable to find someone to help her in neighboring homes.

Twin Cities Pioneer Press noted that Melchert, who is an employee of Elbow Lake Co-op Grain, was working near his home that fateful day, when he made an impulsive decision to pick something up from his house. He told her he needed help with a family situation, Richard Wyffels, the Alexandria police chief, said at a news conference. He is said to have told her that he needed help with a family emergency. It belonged to Mr. Powers.

The assaults happened regularly over several weeks, police allege.

"I did what I had to do", he said.

Alexandria Police Chief Rick Wyffels also spoke, praising the community for spreading Jasmine's story quickly and widely.
