Vehicle hits crowd near London museum, many injured

A number of pedestrians are believed to have been injured after a collision with a vehicle in South Kensington, London.

Eleven people were injured on Saturday when a auto apparently crashed into pedestrians in the London museum district of South Kensington, the ambulance service said.

Witnesses said a blood-soaked man was pinned to the ground and was "laughing" as he was detained.

The accident at 2:20 p.m. outside the popular Natural History Museum in the heart of central London brought a big police response, including helicopters and hazardous area response teams, because of terrorist concerns.

The incident comes just months after an attack on London Bridge where a vehicle slammed into pedestrians left 11 people dead including the attackers. The driver, Darren Osborne, 47, a resident of Cardiff in Wales, was arrested at the scene. Britain has been on a "severe" terrorist threat level and a massive police response followed the traffic incident.

The Natural History Museum tweeted there had been a "serious incident outside the Museum".

Heavy police security has been deployed in the area and ambulances have reached to cater to the injured.

British Prime Minister Theresa May was being updated on the incident, according to her office.

A BBC reporter at the scene said that she saw a auto moving "diagonally" across the road before the crash.

The Metropolitan Police said a number of pedestrians had been injured in a "collision".

Police said they were working to establish the circumstances of the incident, which happened about 2:20 p.m. local time.

"When we arrived there the incident had already taken place and the Police were responding".

Cops have confirmed they have detained a man following the incident and the area is now on lockdown. A photo on Twitter showed three men holding down another man near a black auto.

One witness, identified only as Katy, told LBC London radio she had seen two people injured, including a young boy who had hurt his leg and a woman who was not moving.

Police said more details would be released later.
