Theresa May's Big Speech Couldn't Have Gone Worse If She Tried

UK Prime Minister Theresa May said Friday that the United Kingdom needed "calm leadership", which she was providing with the full support of her cabinet.

"A growing number of my colleagues, we realise that the solution isn't to bury our heads in the sand and just hope things will get better", Shapps told BBC radio.

May had proposed a price cap on the sector earlier this year, the biggest market intervention since privatisation nearly 30 years ago, but the plan was thrown into doubt after her ruling Conservatives lost their parliamentary majority in an election in June.

He said he had previously informed No 10 that a growing number of Tory MPs were keen to have a leadership election.

Seeking to draw a veil over party infighting, she tried to woo back floating voters tempted by opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn's brand of socialism, with a promise to cap energy prices and build more social housing.

Mrs May's conference speech was meant to be a chance to assert her authority over the party following her ill-fated decision to call a snap general election that saw her party lose MPs.

First, she was handed a P45 form by the comedian Simon Brodkin - who plays a character called Lee Nelson - and told it was from Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary.

The Sun, Britain's most popular newspaper, said that a bid to topple May since the speech had failed after rebel Conservative lawmakers admitted they did not yet have the numbers to oust her. I support her to continue.

Speaking on the BBC Today programme, Shapps said there were about 30 backbench MPs who agreed with him, including five former cabinet ministers, while sitting cabinet ministers had privately confessed their concerns.

The stakes were high for the Prime Minister to cheer up her party and show she had understood the lessons of the election, as she took to the stage for her main address. "[Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson] told me to hand her a P45", the prankster said afterward.

Outside the hall, police arrested the prankster for a breach of the peace, and an investigation has been opened to discover how he was able to evade security to get within touching distance of the podium.

"I wouldn't buy a used auto from one embittered colleague - let alone take advice from him about who should be PM", he said.

A Scottish minister, Humza Yousaf said that people feeling sorry for a politician is the worst possible position for a politician, let alone a Prime Minister. "It would be better if she were to start the process, with a new leader before Christmas".
